It is with a great deal of sadness that we let you know of the passing of long time Golden Gloves
Executive Director Stan Gallup. Stan died early Sunday morning February 22, 2009 after
accompanying the Kentucky Wesleyan College (his son Gary is Athletic Director) basketball team
to an away game – enjoying every minute of life until the end. Just two weeks ago Stan performed
the announcing job at the National Silver gloves tournament in Independence, Missouri.

Please keep Stan’s family and his Golden Gloves family in your thoughts and prayers as we mourn
the loss of this great man.

Packer inducted into the National Golden Gloves Hall

before a recent fight. Packer
has been involved with
boxing since 1963.
Dave Packer has attracted national attention to Grand Rapids during his
decorated amateur boxing career.

And, at 63, he is not done. Packer, of Grand Rapids, was inducted into the
National Golden Gloves Hall of Fame this month in a ceremony before the
national tournament in Salt Lake City.

He already is a member of the Michigan Golden Gloves Hall of Fame.

"It was amazing, I couldn't believe it," Packer said. "There are a lot of
people that have been inducted that have played a big part in the sport.
This humbles me and brings me back home."

Packer's part has been big, too.

He began his boxing career in 1963 and later became a coach, club owner
and tournament director for the Michigan and national Golden Gloves
tournaments.

Packer fought as a featherweight from 1963 until he became an assistant
coach with the Teamsters Local 406 Boxing Club in Grand Rapids in 1970. As
a Golden Gloves boxer, he competed in 93 fights and was 72-21.

He remained an assistant coach until 1975, when he started his own club.
In 1980, it became the West Grand Boxing Club, which in 1988 turned into
the Michigan Golden Gloves Association.

It remains open on Leonard Street.

In 1982, Packer began running the Michigan Golden Gloves tournament, a
post he held until last year.

At last year's National Golden Gloves tournament in Grand Rapids, Packer
worked as the competition's director.

"Boxing has definitely been a big part of my life," he said. "Other than
my family, it's the main thing I do. I owe a lot to my wife (Lois),
because if it wasn't for her, I wouldn't have gotten through this."

In addition to coaching many teams that competed internationally, Packer
also coached the 1980 National Golden Gloves team that included Tony
Tucker.

"When I started boxing, it was something that was fun," Packer said.

"When I started my own club, I really enjoyed coaching and working with
kids. I was resistant to taking the director job because I really enjoyed
coaching. But looking back, it's been a great opportunity."

Pat Schmidt took over the director job from Packer this year.

"Dave is so knowledgeable about amateur boxing and cares about it," said
Schmidt, who also is a judge and referee in the sport.

"Dave is about helping the kids, getting them off the street and getting
to business in boxing."

Packer said he is not done, even though he now is easing back on some of
his duties.

"As I pull back from the local level, I'm still the executive director of
the Michigan Golden Gloves and still run the organization, but I'm just
doing a little more at the national level now," Packer said.

"I have developed a love for this sport, and I think to leave it totally
would be a shock factor."
